ISSUE 11 · WEEKLY BRIEFING

Utah Innovation Moves Into the Operating Layer

Wheeler’s SITECH acquisition leads a week of movement in construction technology, private capital, healthcare AI, advanced materials and next-generation geothermal.

THIS WEEK’S SIGNAL

This week’s developments show Utah innovation moving deeper into the systems that established industries use every day. Construction equipment is becoming more connected, restaurant growth is drawing institutional capital, healthcare data is becoming more usable for AI, advanced materials are reaching consumer products and geothermal technology is operating at commercial scale.

WHY I’M WATCHING THIS

Utah has long had strength across industry, capital, research and technology. This week’s stories show those capabilities reinforcing one another as companies acquire specialized teams, raise larger pools of capital, win federal support and place Utah-developed technology inside real products and operating environments.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY · ACQUISITION

Wheeler moves to acquire SITECH Intermountain

Wheeler Machinery Co. entered into an agreement to acquire SITECH Intermountain, the region’s authorized Trimble construction-technology dealer. SITECH’s Salt Lake City and Hurricane teams are expected to become a dedicated construction-technology group inside Wheeler’s new Technology Division after the transaction closes on December 31. Terms were not disclosed.

Why it matters

The acquisition brings specialized technology closer to the contractors building Utah’s roads, utilities and major facilities. It also shows how software, sensors and machine control are becoming core operating capabilities inside traditional industrial businesses.

What to watch

The December closing will set up the combined Technology Division for 2027, with opportunities to expand customer adoption, technical training and integrated support across construction and mining fleets.

CAPITAL · GROWTH

Savory closes an oversubscribed $201.5 million Fund III

Salt Lake City-based Savory Fund closed its third fund at $201.5 million, above its $200 million target. The fund is already 35% deployed across South Block, Bonrue Bakery, Hawkers Asian Street Food and Zao Asian Grill, and Savory expects the portfolio to reach eight or nine brands.

Why it matters

The close adds a substantial Utah-based pool of growth capital in a sector outside the state’s traditional software narrative. Savory’s model combines investment with a local operating platform built to help founder-led restaurant brands expand nationally.

What to watch

Four or five additional investments remain ahead for Fund III, creating a clear pipeline of new brand partnerships, operating growth and national expansion led from Utah.

HEALTHCARE AI · FEDERAL FUNDING

MTN wins $2.34 million to make fragmented data usable for AI

Salt Lake City-based MTN secured a $2.34 million National Institutes of Health SBIR Fast Track award for a privacy-preserving platform that maps how data is structured and connected across fragmented systems. Healthcare is the company’s initial focus, where information often sits across electronic health records, monitoring devices, clinical notes and legacy databases.

Why it matters

AI systems depend on usable, well-understood data. MTN is addressing the integration layer that determines whether advanced tools can work across real healthcare environments while preserving privacy and reducing implementation friction.

What to watch

The Fast Track award gives MTN resources to advance the platform, deepen healthcare partnerships and demonstrate how its data-mapping approach can support additional data-intensive industries.

ADVANCED MATERIALS · COMMERCIALIZATION

DRYOUT technology earns a place on TIME’s Best Inventions list

Urban Armor Gear’s Phone Recovery Pouch, featuring technology from South Jordan-based DRYOUT, was named to TIME’s Best Inventions of 2026. The pouch uses DRYOUT’s reusable material to draw moisture away from exposed electronics and trap it inside an absorbent core.

Why it matters

The recognition is a commercialization milestone for a Utah advanced-materials company. DRYOUT is moving beyond selling a standalone product and into partnerships where its technology becomes a differentiating component inside larger brands.

What to watch

The UAG launch and TIME recognition create momentum for additional OEM partnerships, new product categories and wider adoption of DRYOUT’s reusable moisture-management material.

05

ENERGY · COMMERCIAL DEPLOYMENT

Fervo opens Cape Station to investors after reaching commercial operation

Fervo Energy announced an investor open house at Cape Station in Beaver County for November 19. The event follows the project’s September 30 declaration of commercial operation, which Fervo describes as the first contractual commercial operation of a greenfield enhanced-geothermal development.

Why it matters

Cape Station gives Utah a nationally significant operating site for next-generation geothermal technology. Bringing investors to Beaver County can expand understanding of the project, attract additional capital and strengthen Utah’s role in the emerging energy supply chain.

What to watch

The November open house provides the next visible milestone as Fervo advances the 400-megawatt expansion, builds commercial relationships and prepares for expected 2028 power delivery.
